Check the fit before you buy an office chair

Almost every office chair on Amazon is sold as ergonomic. The word has no set meaning. Two plain numbers decide if a chair fits you. One is how low and high the seat goes. The other is how deep the seat is. Of the six popular chairs we read up on, four listings showed a single seat height instead of a range, and only one listing showed a seat that adjusts for depth.

A person who is 5 ft 8 in needs a seat height of about 18 inches and a seat no deeper than about 18 inches, by our rule of thumb. A person who is 5 ft 2 in needs about 16.5 and 16. The fixed seats on our shortlist run from 17.72 to 20 inches deep, so the second person has far fewer choices.
