How long do office chairs last?

No listing tells you how many years a chair will last. The best clue is the warranty, because a maker that expects a chair to hold up puts more years on it. On our picks, listed warranties run from 1 year to 12 years to a lifetime warranty. Owner reports on some of the chairs with short or unlisted warranties include breaks within weeks or months.

The GABRYLLY listing says 3 years in the bullets and at least 5 in the spec table. We charted the lower number. The HON Ignition 2.0 listing says it is backed by the HON full lifetime warranty. Neither Amazon Basics chair showed a warranty on the page we read. Read the warranty terms for weight limits and which parts are covered.

What a standard adds

BIFMA publishes test standards for office chairs. ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 covers general-purpose office chairs. X5.11 covers large occupant chairs and bases its tests on 400 pounds. A listing that says it meets a BIFMA standard is telling you the design was checked against an industry test. It is still a maker claim, and it does not promise a number of years.

Signs it is time to repair or replace

1. The seat sinks while you sit. That usually means a worn gas lift. On many chairs the lift can be replaced.
2. The back no longer holds its angle. The tilt lock or tension has worn.
3. A caster or leg cracks. Stop using the chair until it is fixed.
4. The foam has gone flat and you feel the seat pan under you.
5. The arms wobble even after you tighten the screws.

CCOHS suggests checking with the maker for which parts to inspect and how often. Tighten the screws a few weeks after assembly and again now and then.

Buy for the long run

If you want a chair to last, weigh the warranty and owner reports on durability before extras like a headrest. Then make sure it fits, because a chair that does not fit gets replaced early anyway.
